Mexico’s Maya Train is open. Here’s what to know about taking it.

CANCUN, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO, January 30, 2024 - EIN/

Its route covers the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo.

The Maya Train is the long-awaited, billion-dollar infrastructure project that is predicted to revolutionize travel for tourists and locals alike throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.

As the region experiences a tourism boom like never before, the call for a world-class transport service has been at the top of everybody’s list.

The highly anticipated Tren Maya railway has been launched, offering intrepid traveller's the chance to go beyond the confines of tourist-trap Cancun and discover pristine beaches, jungles, pyramids and lesser-known towns.

Ask any local about Cancun and they’ll tell you it’s not the real Mexico. It’s a metropolis of foreign-owned, all-inclusive high-rises available on package holidays– somewhere designed as an easy fly-and-flop escape, where you linger on its white sugar beaches full of tourists with a mojito in hand and don’t need to look up for a week. But this is a missed opportunity to explore the Mayan heartland on its doorstep – and now there’s a train to take you there.

From January 2024, Tren Maya – which spans 900 miles and five states in southeast Mexico – will enable visitors to take the road (or rather, the rails) less travelled and deep dive into the Mayan culture of past and present. It seamlessly connects Cancun, the usual point of entry for travelers, to the Pristine beaches, region’s Unesco World Heritage archaeological sites, exuberant biospheres and historic towns.

Key points of interest such as Playa Mundo Maya's white powdered sandy beaches and Isla Aguada - Magic Town will become quicker and easier to reach by rail and complimentary bus shuttle transfers. Lesser-known Mayan ruins, such as Uxmal, the vibrant city of San Francisco de Campeche, and Calakmul Bioreserve, Mexico’s largest forest reserve and Balamku, , Chicanna and Xpuhil, will also be easier to access on this mega train route.

Once fully up and running, it’s hoped there will be high-speed services every two hours from most stations, as well as dining and sleeper services.

Some FAQ’s About The Maya Train

What will be the route of the Mayan Train? The Mayan Train route will travel through 5 states: Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo, spanning over 1,500 kilometres and stopping at 40 municipalities and 181 towns in south-eastern Mexico.

What will the cost of a train ticket be? There are currently two main ticket prices available: tourist class $67 USD (1,166 pesos) and premier class $107 USD (1,862 pesos). There are also discount ticket prices for students, the elderly and wheelchair users which are available to purchase both online and at stations as well.

Will the train stop at any airports? Yes! There are 7 International Airports along the Maya Route, with the two most significant being Cancun International, and the newly opened Tulum International, giving an affordable and trustworthy option to tourists who wish to get to their hotel destinations. It will also stop at airports in Chetumal, Merida, Campeche, Ciudad del Carmen and Palenque.

What will the experience be like? The train is fully equipped with essential amenities like Wifi, air conditioning, and food/drink options. The train routes will travel through some incredible geographic landscapes, rural communities, magical towns, beaches and world heritage sites, meaning the views are going to be out of this world.

Will there be an overnight service option? You will have the ability to choose the train option specific to overnight journeys, allowing visitors the chance to travel through the region at their own pace.

Campeche

If you want to know what the likes of Chichén Itzá and Tulum looked like before excavation, head to Campeche where hundreds, if not thousands, of Mayan temples have been reclaimed by the jungle. Calakmul is Mexico’s largest forest reserve, comprising 723,185 hectares of now Unesco-protected land. To experience the best beaches of Mexico head with the train to the station of Escarciega town from where take shuttle to Playa Mundo Maya, located between Sabancuy and Isla Aguada towns.

New Hotel Zone; Playa Mundo Maya by GPS-Group is the New Holiday Destination in Isla Aguada, Yucatan

Playa Mundo Maya, a new boutique eco-hotel destination, is under construction on the Yucatan coast, located out of the sargassum and hurricane path in the Gulf of Mexico side of the Yucatan Peninsula in Isla Aguada, which just recently has been appointed "Pueblo Magico" - a top holiday destination in Mexico.

Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, January 18, 2021 --(FOX News)--

Isla Aguada has the most attractive white sandy beach in the State of Campeche; the area is set to be the brand-new luxury holiday destination: Playa Mundo Maya.

The first holiday rental villas and eco-hostel "La Playita" are ready. Several projects are under construction, and many more will be developed in the 42 km-long beaches to the north of Isla Aguada.

The Global Property Service Group (GPS-Group), the biggest landowner in the area, was just recently authorized to build the first eco-hotel resort and marine life observatory, and numerous eco-hotels, beach clubs, spas, retreats, and boutiques will be built.

Mayan Train railway and Tulum Luxury airport projects start operating in 2023 with over 3 million tourists in Mundo Maya Area.

The US$10 billion railway project would link towns, cities, and tourist attractions in five southern states. It is expected to transport 8,000 passengers per day. The train project will trigger real estate investment of at least 150 billion pesos (the US$17.9 billion), according to the chief of the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur). The government says that the construction and operation of the Mayan Train will generate employment and economic prosperity in the whole southeast of Mexico.

Both the government and the GPS-Group aim to transform the island into the most attractive sustainable tourist destination in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The hotel zone will benefit local people as the land price is expected to increase, and residents are opening their businesses to serve all the visiting tourists. Local people can run every type of business to respond to the growing market’s demand. They will feel delighted with more job opportunities, which ultimately raise their standard of living.

Investors have turned their attention to Playa Mundo Maya, as the demand for hotel rooms is huge as Isla Aguada town has just under 100 hotel rooms available where other Pueblos Magicos have an average of 30,000 hotel rooms.

The most attractive part for investors is that the land price on the island is much lower than the other beach areas developed in the Yucatan Peninsula, where the huge demand from international hotel companies has been already pushing prices much higher in recent years. Regarding the local real estate company: Isla Aguada Real Estate, the average oceanfront land square meter price on Isla Aguada beach is now USD 77 per square meter compared to over USD 350 per square meter Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo coastline. Land price in Playa Mundo Maya is expected to increase strongly in the near future.

For many hotel owners who have faced last year's severe seaweed problem in the Mexican Caribbean coastline, Playa Mundo Maya presents a natural choice to build their second eco-hotel as the millions of tons of seaweed have been piling up in Cancun, Riviera Maya, and nearby beaches in Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Holbox.

Playa Mundo Maya is located on another side of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Mexican Gulf's safe side, which is away from the sargassum path and the high-risk of hurricane impact.

Isla Aguada and Playa Mundo Maya have all the same ingredients for success as Playa Del Carmen and Cancun had 20 or 30 years ago, including pristine beaches and lagoon, Mayan ruins, and world-class fishing and diving, to name a few.

By the time the Mayan Train railway is operating, the Playa Mundo Maya will be competing with the world's most attractive destinations for honeymoons and health retreats embracing the heart of Mexican culture.

Developers turn attention toward Campeche state

2020 By Megan Dillinger

TRAVEL WEEKLY

INSIGHT, MEXICO INSIGHT

As Merida and the rest of the state of Yucatan come into the spotlight, travelers looking for the next hot destination are setting their sights on Campeche. Developers are taking notice and are already on track to start developing the next "Mexican riviera."

Campeche, directly to the west of the state of Yucatan, is one of the three states that make up the Yucatan Peninsula, along with Yucatan and Quintana Roo. With an extended coastline that hugs the Gulf of Mexico, and the rest of the state shrouded in undeveloped jungle, it presents a wealth of off-the-beaten-path travel opportunities that investors and travelers in the know are capitalizing on. In fact, according to Expedia, Campeche is one of the top trending travel destinations for 2020.

$200 million is being poured into Sabancuy, Campeche, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The destination is being hailed as Playa Mundo Maya. The tourism project will take up an area of 148 acres, which will include bungalows, two pools, a restaurant, beach club, shops, a spa facility and an exhibition center. There is also talk of more eco-hotels being developed in the future.

The new "hotel zone" is being designed with the traffic from the Mayan train route in mind, opening up new beach destinations all along the edge of the peninsula that have been previously overshadowed by Cancun. Today, Sabancuy is a quiet inlet with powdery white sand that is often the nesting ground for turtles. The closest city is Ciudad del Carmen, which is where the nearest airport is located. While a completion date has not been announced, the permits have been approved to break ground.

The development of the coastline is going to highlight the rest of what the state of Campeche has to offer, from dozens of Mayan ruins to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, and the Historic Fortified Town of Campeche, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site, and one of the most postcard-perfect examples of colonial Mexican architecture.

The state has 17 archaeological sites, including Calakmul, which is the largest Mayan city that has ever been discovered. In fact, the ruins are recognized by Unesco as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Within the jungle, which makes up more than half of the state, there are more than 86 species of mammals, including jaguars and pumas.

Campeche has bones for the luxury community, as well, with gorgeously renovated historic haciendas that have been turned into five-star hotels. Take, for example, the Hacienda Puerto Campeche, a Luxury Collection Hotel, located directly in the Centro Historic of Campeche's capital. The brightly colored oasis within the downtown is a haven of hospitality. The 16th century retreat features beautiful gardens, stunning rooms, a beautiful restaurant, and a pool that has been built out of the crumbling ruins of the former hacienda that used to live on this land.

Outside the city, the Hacienda Uayamon was built in 1700 and today provides an urban respite to enjoy the countryside outside the capital city. Dark wood and colonial furniture set the tone for enjoying beautiful suites (some with private pools), fine dining and the raw, untamed jungle of the wilderness of Campeche. One of the best perks of the hotel is strolling through the candlelit gardens, or taking the quick trip to the Mayan archaeological site, Edzna.

While destinations like Merida and the coast of the Yucatan are picking up steam, Campeche is waiting in the wings. Now is the perfect time to see all that this state has to offer, before everyone else catches on.

Playa Mundo Maya’ moves ahead, with Campeche hotel zone funded in Merida.

-February 17, 2020

A new Hotel Zone in Campeche aligns with the Mayan Train project.

Merida, Yucatan — A group of national and foreign businessmen who have Yucatan investments presented the PLAYA MUNDO MAYA beach holiday resort destination that would feed off the MAYAN TRAIN and build up miles of unspoiled beach.

The tourist destination, between Isla Aguada and Sabancuy, next to federal highway 180 in Ciudad del Carmen, is billed as an “eco-tourism” mini-city called Ah Kanan. Details of the project were announced at a press conference Thursday.

Representatives of the investors announced several businesses, many with foreign investment, which are opening in Mérida and Campeche, waiting for the new hotel zone.

The 148-acre stretch of Campeche Beach is owned and operated by Merida-based The Global Property Service Group. It will be one of the new attractions and the remote archaeological sites, accessible by the planned Mayan Train.

Around US$200 million will be invested in the complex, and entrepreneurs from Monterrey, Mexico City, the United States, Canada, Europe, Singapore, and South Korea will participate, a spokesman said. Backers were said to be interested in the natural beauty of the area and promise to preserve the environment while creating jobs for the economy.

The development director, Raúl Alberto Gómez Llanos Chaires, said the group has authorization from the Federal Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) to initiate the first eco-hotel.

The first phase of Ah Kanan involves a reception and parking area, solar energy systems, bungalows, an observation tower, two pool areas, a restaurant, a beach club, shops, spa facilities, and a health center,” he said.

Some investors hope to repeat their success throughout the RIVIERA MAYA, which has been booming for years.

“By the time the planned tourist centers are open, Playa Mundo Maya will be competing with the world’s most attractive destinations for honeymoons and health retreats that encompass the heart of Mexican culture,” he concluded.

Two Billion USD for Eco-Tourism Plan

http://tribunacampeche.com/carmen/2019/11/15/dos-mmdd-para-plan-ecoturistico/

With an investment of more than two billion dollars, foreign investors will build a hotel zone for ecotourism between Isla Aguada and Sabancuy, Campeche in Yucatan Peninsula, which in three phases intends to occupy around 600 hectares in which they could offer a space with services of bungalows in the area of the estuary, but also beach area. According to Ramón Trejo Castro, a businessman from Sabancuy, foreign investors had asked the Campeche authorities for their intervention to obtain the permits from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (for several years SEMARNAT). It was until June 10 when the Environmental Impact Manifesto (MIA) was issued. They authorize the construction of the “Interpretive and Eco-Tourism Center for the conservation of the sea turtle Ah Kanan” which will be in charge of The Global Property Service Group S. de RL de CV.

The permit issued by the Campeche delegation of the SEMARNAT dictates three years to prepare and construct the project. The work is begun in the first months of 2020, bringing employment opportunities for the region.

“SEMARNAT authorized the first stage to build the first ecological hotels that will give us a guarantee so that we can continue making investments later, it is a strong investment, but it will be worth it. The Sabancuy town deserves that and more, the greater part of the people who make up our project are foreign people. Everything is ecotourism. The amount of the investment is for now about two billion dollars. We intend to start working at the beginning of next year.”

The first phase of Ah Kanan includes a reception area, parking area, solar energy, bungalows, observation tower, two pool areas, a restaurant, beach club, shops, spa facilities, and an exhibition center. According to the master plan, the rest of the units will be built in two phases. Eco-hotel building lots are available with owner financing. The meager land price is expected to increase next year to the same level as in the hotel zones already built-in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, and Tulum Quintana Roo, and the Yucatan States, and it is an excellent investment opportunity.

The Ah Kanan eco-resort is the first hotel to be built on the new hotel zone between Isla Aguada and Sabancuy by the Federal Highway Nr. 180, in Ciudad del Carmen, in the State of Campeche. The first phase of the Ah Kanan resort involves:

The reception, parking area, solar power plant & luxury bungalows, observation tower, two pool areas, a restaurant, beach club & shops, Spa Education facilities as well as an exhibition center The office building for National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP)

According to the master plan, the rest of the units will be built in two phases. Several eco-hotel projects are planned to follow in Playa Mundo Maya, and responsible international hotel corporations expect their projects to be evaluated during the following year of 2020. The Global Property Service Group is behind the Playa Mundo Maya hotel zone concept.

The corporation is still offering oceanfront lots at affordable prices. The owner financing is to invite new hotels and service providers to be a part of this new eco-touristic hotspot. Several well-known international and national hotel companies have presented their interest to invest in the area. Hotel owners also expect heavy investing from Tulum and Playa Del Carmen. Many lots are already bought or reserved by the same investors who experienced the boom in Riviera Maya.

Naturally, all their experience will be welcomed in this new area, establishing an example of how to conserve and improve nature hand-in-hand with eco-tourism. It is expected that the eco-social solutions of Playa Mundo Maya will be followed and copied worldwide.

The Playa Mundo Maya will be a beautiful holiday attraction for the new MAYAN TRAIN (Tren Maya) passengers. In the following years, 3 million tourists are expected to be looking for new areas in the southern part of the Yucatan peninsula.

The Global Property Service Group is a company located in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. They are an international real estate investment and development company. The company has 15 years of experience in investing, designing, developing, and financing touristic projects in Mexico. The group has everything to manage all size of projects on behalf of their large list of
international, private, and corporate clients with the highest quality on the market.

The CEO & Chairman of GPS Group, Mikael Nordstrom, commented: By the time the planned resorts are open, the Playa Mundo Maya will be competing with the world's most attractive destinations for honeymoons and health retreats embracing the heart of Mexican culture.

Mexico’s environment ministry, Semarnat, has authorized a fledgling hotel zone first project, the Ah Kanan.

Like its future neighbors, the eco-resort will be built between Isla Aguada and Sabancuy off Federal Highway 180 in Ciudad del Carmen.

The stretch of Campeche beachfront, dubbed Playa Mundo Maya, is owned and operated by Merida-based Global Property Service Group. It will be one of the new attractions and the remote archaeological sites, reachable by the planned Mayan Train.

The first phase of Ah Kanan involves the reception, parking area, solar power, bungalows, observation tower, two pool areas, a restaurant, beach club, shops, spa facilities, and an exhibition center.

According to the master plan, the rest of the units will be built in two phases.

More eco-hotel projects are planned in Playa Mundo Maya, and several international hotel corporations are expecting their projects to be evaluated in 2020, said GPSG.

The developer is still selling oceanfront lots. Some investors are hoping to repeat their success along the Riviera Maya, which has been booming for years, says the developer.

GPSG has 15 years of experience in investing, designing, developing, and financing tourist projects in Mexico.

“By the time the planned resorts are open, Playa Mundo Maya will be competing with the world’s most attractive destinations for honeymoons and health retreats embracing the heart of Mexican culture,” said GPSG’s CEO, Mikael Nordstrom.
